Buri RamBuri Ram literally means the pleasantcity. It is a city with abundant sandstonesanctuaries of ancient Khmer culture. It issituated in the lower part of the Northeasternregion, about 410 kilometres from Bangkok.The province covers a total area of 10,322square kilometres. The administrativesystem is divided into 23 districts. InBuri Ram, there are archaeological finds ofpre-historic human habitation and ancientruins from the Dvaravati period. The mostimportant historical evidence found in theprovince includes more than 60 sandstonesanctuaries scattered around the area. Theevidence shows that ancient civilisationsonce existed in Buri Ram. There are alsodiscoveries of important Khmer potterykiln sites which date back to the 10th –13th centuries.After the ancient Khmer period, thehistorical evidence of Buri Ram startedagain in the late Ayutthaya period as aprotectorate of Nakhon Ratchasima. Thecity also appeared again during the Thon Buriand Rattanakosin periods. Then in 1933,there was restructuring of the regionaladministrative system which turned Buri Raminto a province until the present day.
