
PHICHIT
PHICHITPhichit is situated in the lower Northern Region of Thailand.The name “Phichit” means “The Beautiful Town”. It wasprobably founded by Phraya Khot Thabong in 1056. Duringthe Sukhothai period (1238-1350), the community wasnamed “Sa Luang” which was one of the important town ofSukhothai. Phichit was named again in Ayutthaya period(1350-1767) as “Okhaburi” (Town in the Swamp) and it wasthe place where King Sanphet VIII or “Phrachao Sua” ofAyutthaya was born. Phichit was designated as a provinceduring Rattanakosin period, in the reign of King Rama V(1868-1910). The Thai famous legend “Kraithong”, the lovestory was also originated in Phichit. It was so impressive thatthe story has been well-known through out the country sothe province itself is also known as “the Land of the Legend”.Covering an area of 4,531,013 square kilometres, Phichitconsists of a topography of a basin in the central part and agradual high plain on the east side. The province’s mainoccupation is agriculture, followed by the wholesale, retailand service industries.
