The province covers an area of 10,815square kilometres, featuring mountains, plainsand forest in the east and river basin. The NanRiver, lifeline of the province runs through theheart of the city. Formerly, the citywas named Song Khwae, meaning two rivers,as it was located between the Nan and KhwaeNoi River. The original location of Song Khwaecity is at Wat Chulamani. Around the year 1357,king of Sukhothai, Phra Maha ThammarachaLithai, decided to move the town to its presentlocation. Since then, Phitsanulok served as astrategic border town ruled by members of theroyal family.During the Ayutthaya period, the town playeda larger role as a buffer town betweenAyutthaya, the capital city, and the northernkingdom. Following an administrative reformby King Borommatrailokkanat, it had served asthe capital city for 25 years. After that, the townwas downgraded to a strategic border town. Ithas played a major role in blocking the invasionof Burmese troops. King Naresuan the Great,who ruled the town in a capacity as CrownPrince, mobilized troops from Phitsanulokto fight against the Burmese who then ruledover the Siamese Kingdom, and reclaimedindependence in 1584.Phitsanulok became a strategic town in curbingBurmese invasion again in 1775 in the Thon Buriperiod. During a tough battle, the Burmesearmy’s commander requested an appearanceof a Thai commander, Chaophraya Chakri, andpredicted that he would become a king. Chaophraya Chakri was later crowned the first monarch of the Rattanakosin period, King Rama Ithe Great of the Royal House of Chakri. Phitsanulok was upgraded to be a circle called Monthon Phitsanulok in 1894 in the reign of KingRama V. Then get on Highway No.117 bound for Phitsanulok. This route, which isthe most convenient way, is 377 kilometreslong from Bangkok.From Sing Buri, motorist can use Highway No.11, the In Buri-Tak Fa route, and turn intoHighway No. 12 to Amphoe Wang Thong ofPhitsanulok, and turn left to Phitsanulok whichis 17 kilometres away.
