However, a changein the course of the river caused a draughtthat forced the people to migrate and settleon the banks of river, and these communitiesdeveloped into towns. The new town was called“Nakhon Chai Si” or “Sirichai”, leaving NakhonPathom deserted for hundreds of years untilthe reign of King Rama IV.While His Majesty was in monk hood, hetravelled to Nakhon Pathom and found thePhra Pathom Chedi that he regarded to bethe largest pagoda of all. When King Rama IVascended to the throne, he commanded that abell shaped Chedi be built to cover the formerChedi. The surrounding area was also renovatedand improved. He also commanded that a watercanal be dug to facilitate commuting, whichwas called Chedi Bucha canal. During the reignof King Rama V, the construction of railways tothe south began, at that time Nakhon Pathomwas still a heavily forested area. King Rama Valso commanded that the town be relocatedfrom Tambon Tha Na, Amphoe Nakhon ChaiSi, to the Phra Pathom Chedi area as it used tobe. Nakhon Pathom has been there ever since.During the reign of King Rama VI, a palace wasbuilt at Tambon Sanam Chan as a temporaryresidence on his travels and many roads wereconstructed. A large bridge was also built overthe Chedi Bucha canal, which His Majestynamed “Saphan Charoensattha”. Later, hecommanded that the name of Nakhon Chai Sibe changed to Nakhon Pathom, but the name ofthe prefecture was still called “Nakhon Chai Si”until the reign of King Rama VII when the callingof the prefecture was ended. Nakhon Chai Siis now one of the districts in Nakhon Pathom.Nakhon Pathom covers an area of 2,168 squarekilometres or 542,081.6 acres. It is dividedinto 7 administrative districts or Amphoe,they are: Amphoe Mueang Nakhon Pathom,Amphoe Buddhamonthon, Amphoe SamPhran, Amphoe Nakhon Chai Si, Amphoe BangLen, Amphoe Kamphaeng Saen, and AmphoeDon Toom. Most of the areas are plains withno mountainous land, plateau are found in thewest east of Amphoe Mueang and AmphoeKamphaeng Saen. The plains along the Tha ChinRiver (Nakhon Chai Si River) are the locationof Amphoe Nakhon Chai Si, Amphoe SamPhran, and Amphoe Bang Len. These fertilelands provide agricultural area for people,thus most of the residents earn their livingfrom agriculture; plantations, farming, growingfood crops, and fruit orchards.
