KAMPHAENG PHETKamphaeng Phet is a location of an ancient city that existedin Thai history at least 700 years ago. As an importantstrategic outpost of the Sukhothai Kingdom, the city wasstrongly fortified with walls and battlements, which stillremain to be seen. According to historical evidence, twotowns known as Chakangrao and Nakhon Chum had existedon the left and right banks, respectively, of the Ping Riverbefore the emergence of Kamphaeng Phet. The latter islocated opposite the old Kamphaeng Phet town, andtherefore, is of historical as well as cultural importance.Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park was proclaimed a WorldHeritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. The province also offersseveral natural attractions with verdant forests abundantwith flora, fauna, and various kinds of birds, such as MaeWong National Park, Khlong Lan National Park, and KhlongWang Chao National Park.Situated in the Lower North of Thailand, Kamphaeng Phetboasts the topography of plains in the north and south, withundulating mountains in the west, which are the origin ofthe province’s streams and tributaries.
