In the 7thcentury, fromfound evidence, the city merged with theKingdom of Srivijaya. The ancient city wasdivided into 3 towns: Viangsa, Khiri Rat Nikomand Tha Thong. Then in the reign of KingRama IV, the town of Tha Thong was moved byRoyal command to Ban Don and upgraded toa fourth-level town subject to Bangkok, andwas royally renamed “Kanchanadit.” Whena province was established as a form ofadministration in the reign of King Rama V,the three towns were combined as one calledChaiya. In 1915, King Rama VI changed thename from Chaiya to Surat Thani, meaning thecity of good people.”Surat Thani is the largest province in theSouth, spreading over an area of 12,891 squarekilometres. It covers a rainforest area with adiversity of flora and fauna. Furthermore, itboasts crystal-clear sea, white sandy beaches,and famous islands; such as, Ko Samui, KoPha-Ngan, Ko Tao, and Ko Nang Yuan.
