PATTANIPattani is an east coast province in the South, adjacent to theGulf of Thailand, with an area of approximately 1,940.356square kilometres. There are two major rivers:Tani and Sai Buri. A civilised town in the past, Pattani was thecapital state of the Langkasuka Empire, an independentstate of Thai Buddhists in the 2nd century, which covered thearea of the provinces of Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, andNarathiwat in Thailand, as well as, the states of Kelantan andTerengganu of Malaysia. The present Pattani still maintainssome ruins of the ancient town in Amphoe Yarang. Due to itsmountainous area and long seashore of about 170kilometres, Pattani has been an important port and centre ofadministration, trading, and culture.
